LAID OFF: The First 100 Days, Day 6

Hooray! I made it through on the phone to the Unemployment hotline today and was finally able to file.

Oh but the mix bag of emotions that come with filing. An (ex-)colleague of mine from Modernista! mentioned in her facebook status that she was on her way to an interview yesterday.  Just 3 work days after being laid off.  It made me feel like I wasn't trying hard enough. As though I'm perhaps a slacker. And am taking advantage of the system. What did I do today?

This morning, my alarm went off at 8:50 - I tried the unemployment hotline from bed first thing. no go. so by 9:30, John and I were up and at 'em - off to the gym and home before 11;00. I wrote out Valentine's Day Cards to our grandmother's and parents, showered and then we were off to run errands.  We made copies of my signed severance letter before dropping the original, along with the Valentines for my family, in the mail. Treated ourselves to Starbucks. And headed to Harvard Square - where I exchanged my pink dress for a red one, happily and somewhat accidentally stumbled upon some cheap black costume jewelry to go with the dress and did some browsing around.

Upon returning home, the plan was to do some job searching. but unfortunately, we spent the next 3 hours trying to fix the laptop.  which has decided to stop starting up (kind of ironic, considering microsoft's previous ad campaign, "start it up"). The HP folks will arrange for us to ship it back for service - we should hopefully have the computer up and running by early March.

Awesome. So now John and I have one computer to share while we are stuck at home, searching for  new work.  Very frustrating. Where is my fairy godmother when I need her most??? I should have registered for a computer for our wedding last year, considering John lives on his computer, whether he is playing video games, searching the web, or playing video games.

Tonight, I suckered him into agreeing to give up video games until we have the other computer back. We'll see if that happens.

Needless to say, by the time that we finished putzing around with the broken laptop, I had lost all motivation to do any job searching. John wanted to try a new recipe for dinner of which I was admittedly quite skeptical. And which, admittedly, turned out to be pretty tasty. And recession friendly. Pasta, canned tuna, lemon juice, bread crumbs (home made) and olives.  We, of course, added cheese.  I'm sure John will post the recipe to our cooking blog, stonesoupchefs.blogspot.com.  check it out!

I met up with some friends from my PUMA days at The Burren, a lovely, Irish Pub in Davis Square around 6:30. Thanks to John's frugal ways, his plan to feed me first worked out well and I stuck to 3 simple beers. I just need to train myself to purchase the cheapest beer. From the start. Tonight, I ordered 2 Newcastles and an Amstel Light. I thought the Amstel Light would be cheaper than the Newcastle, but I actually don't think it was.

After returning home, I watched Lost and then Life on Mars. I'd love to be able to say that John and I watched them together. But instead, he was off playing video games. and, in an effort to make it up to me, went on a candy run for me while I typed up this entry.

So, that my friends, is Day 6.  This is what the first 6 days of the first 100 looks like, folks. the real deal.

Here I Am!

Hello World. This is something I've always wanted. But I have no idea where this is going. And I don't like doing something without knowing where its going. But as I sat at my desk on this quiet Friday morning, my boyfriend sent me a link to his recently created blog. And I knew I could do something better. So if there's room out there for him on the world wide web, then there's definitely room for me. So here I am!
